World cultures

Unique in Brittany, this Roman cloisters and its remarkable pond, the fountain and 16th century oratory, as well as the abbey-church dating from the 12th century, all bear witness to the initial splendour of this site. A former monastery, built in the 12th century by Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, the Abbaye de Daoulas overlooks the little town of Daoulas, once a strategic port between the Léon region of Brittany and Cornwall.
According to legend, the beginnings of the abbey date back to the year 510 although the first known documents, dated from the 12th century, attest to its foundation in 1167 by the Viscount of Léon. After a long period of prosperity, the buildings, sold during the Revolution, became private property, apart from the abbey-church which now served as the church for the parish. The Abbaye de Daoulas has the rare privilege of possessing numerous points of interest for visitors – the charming gardens with their diverse and fascinating range of plants, the patrimonial aspects of the site, and the discovery of lost or distant cultures through a programme of exhibitions whose focus is the elsewhere, a theme particularly pertinent to this region of travellers.
